Reading this page does not make you our patient

A provider-patient relationship begins only when a licensed clinician evaluates you in a scheduled consultation, and even then it is limited to that evaluation. This matters more in Colorado than elsewhere, because state law defines what such a relationship requires before an ESA recommendation may be issued.

An animal supports a person; it does not treat a condition

If you are living with anxiety, depression, PTSD or anything else, please also work with a treating provider. Our clinicians will say so during your consultation where it applies. An assistance animal can make daily life more manageable. It is not a substitute for care.

Nobody can promise you an outcome

A clinician may decide you do not meet the criteria, and that judgement is theirs to make. Even with an approved letter, a landlord, HOA, airline, employer or university may still refuse. Colorado law is unusually favourable since August 2026, but favourable is not the same as guaranteed.

On accuracy

Housing and disability rules move quickly. Colorado's own HB26-1045 took effect in August 2026, weeks after HUD moved in the opposite direction, which is a good illustration of how fast a page written last year can become wrong. We update when the law changes and Andrew Patel, LCSW reviews these pages for clinical accuracy. Even so, verify anything that matters against the primary sources linked at the foot of every page, and email support@coloradoesaletter.org if you find an error. A person reads those.
